Developing the Right Marketing Strategy for your Online Business

Marketing StrategyA strong marketing strategy, covering all aspects of your business, is the core of online business. My experience has taught me that any marketing strategy is incomplete if it does not take into account the very nitty-gritty of running your business (business operations).

In developing a business marketing strategy, particularly for internet marketing business, the first thing that comes to mind is the list of channels to be created to reach my target market. Most people believe that creating a marketing strategy for their online home based business is as simple as putting up a website, doing some search engine optimization (SEO) and building a few links to some related websites.

Wake up! No business can be built in this manner, least of all an online business. Building a great and successful business, even if it is a small business, requires a sound marketing strategy. This marketing strategy should be as comprehensive as possible.

Your Winning Marketing Strategy

A winning marketing strategy is more than just a concept; it is actually a work of art, lots of "science" and supplemented with generous portions of commerce. Allow me to elaborate on each of these.

When I say it is a work of art, your winning marketing strategy must be based on an attractive and functional website design with easy-to-use support structures including e-newsletters, e-magazines and blogging. Your website must be both attractive and easy to use.

When I talk about science, I am referring to the science of internet marketing. Yes, internet marketing is a science because it requires the understanding and applications of the dynamics of organic and paid marketing, right use of technology, and leveraging the latest developments to further your online business ahead of your competitors.

By having generous portions of commerce, I mean application of the very basic concepts of commerce - focusing your business on your niche (target market) that is also in demand; leveraging demand and supply (profitability) precisely, striking the right balance between profits and revenues and, of course, making customer service and satisfaction the backbone of your business.

In an offline setting, customer service is actually easier because your customers are geographically closer to your place(s) of business. With an online business, and in particular a home-based one, your potential customers can originate from anywhere across the world. You need to pay particular attention to measuring and improving customer satisfaction on a continuing basis. Plan to follow the practice of under promising and over delivering - it's how world class customer service is done.

When creating your online business marketing strategy, you should give the lion's share of attention to customer service. Many online businesses flounder and fail because they did not do so. Don't make that fatal mistake. Make sure to meet and exceed the expectations you set for your customers.

Finally, follow a very open door policy when building your online business. Adopt a strategy that allows customers to have a very clear picture about your overall business and become involved in the processes that help you build lasting relationships.
